  • 11th EASN International Conference

    EASN Association

    The EASN Association and the University of Salerno are glad to announce the 11th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens" which will take place in Salerno, Italy from the 1st until the 4th of September, 2021.

    The EASN Team is working for organizing a physical Conference in Salerno, Italy and we are confident and optimistic that despite of the current COVID-19 pandemic situation it will be by then, possible. In any case, we are also preparing for a hybrid or a fully virtual Conference as a backup solution in case it would become necessary. The conference venue will be located at the Fisciano Campus of the University of Salerno.

    The aim of this gathering is dual. To act as a forum where innovative ideas, breakthrough concepts and disruptive technologies are presented, while in parallel be the place for disseminating the knowledge and results achieved in the frame of research projects of the Aviation and Space field. The previous 10th EASN Internationl Conference, which due to the COVID pandemic, it was the first time in the history of the EASN Conference series that it was held virtually, was attended by more than 350 participants from various disciplines.

    Like its predecessors, the 11th EASN International Conference will include a number of Plenary Talks by distinguished personalities of the European Aviation and Space sectors from the academia, industry, research community and policy makers. It will also include Thematic Sessions, along with Technical Workshops where evolving ideas, technologies, products, services and processes will be discussed.

    Furthermore, the conference is expected to be a major European Dissemination and Exploitation event of Aviation and Space - related research. The majority of the currently running research projects will exploit the 3-days technical program to present their activities and achieved goals, discuss on current trends and future needs of the Aviation and Space - related research and try to identify possible synergies with each other. Additionally, a number of policy development projects will also find the floor to present the strategic priorities of the European aviation sector.

    Last but not least, we are glad to announce that the 11th EASN International Conference will be performed with the support of significant Stakeholders of the European and Italian Aviation and Space Sector. Confirmed has been so far the support of Clean Sky 2Aerospace ValleyFraunhofer-Gesellschaft, Campania Aerospace Technological District (DAC)National Aerospace Technology Cluster (CTNA) and Piedmont Aerospace Cluster.

  • 10th EASN Virtual Conference

    The 10th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens", was successfully held between the 2nd and 4th of September 2020. Due to the COVID pandemic, the event was held virtually. The EASN Association is proud for organizing the EASN Conference during the challenging times of COVID-19 and thus, offering a small contribution to Europe’s efforts back to normality.

    In this frame the EASN Conference Team would like to seize the opportunity and cordially thank the Keynote Speakers, Session Chairs, Authors and Presenters, the members of the International Scientific Committee and all those who have contributed in making this virtual gathering a real success. It was the first time that the EASN annual gathering took place virtually and this surely represented a big challenge for the Organizing Committee. 

    The conference was attended by more than 350 participants from 37 countries worldwide, resulting as the second largest event of the EASN Association. Among others, the EASN Virtual Conference's programme included: 

    • 9 Κey-Νote Lectures given by distinguished personalities of the European Aviation & Space Community.
    • An extended dissemination of the activities performed in the frame of the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking (CSJU)showcased in two dedicated Workshops and 28 CS projects.
    • A Workshop which disseminates the major achievements of more than 20 collaborative research projects, funded under H2020, with the support of INEA. The projects have disseminated their latest research results as well as the future trends on the respective technological field. 
    • More than 320 technical presentations distributed in 47 sessions
    • A number of sessions focusing on significant issues in the context of the European Aeronautics research area. Special attention is given to the implementation of Open Science as well as to the Impact Assesment of the performed research. 

    The 10th EASN Virtual Conference has been performed with the kind support of the Clean Sky Joint UndertakingLEONARDO S.p.AItalian Aerospace Research Centre (CIRA) and Fraunhofer IPT. The event was kindly sponsored by LEONARDO S.p.A.

    Finally, EASN has announced its 11th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens" that will be held in Salerno, Italy on September 1st to 4th, 2021. The event is co-organized by the EASN Association and the University of Salerno and it will be hosted in the Salerno University premises.

  • EASN Publication Policy

    Permanent aim of the EASN Association is to ensure excellence and high scientific merit of the EASN Conference series. Publication of high-quality proceedings and special issues of reputable peer-reviewed international journals contribute to achieving this aim. In this frame the following publication arrangements have been performed: 

    10th EASN VIrtual Conference on “Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens” 

    • Proceedings: Full papers submitted and presented during the 10th EASN Virtual Conference, will be published in the respective open access volume of the "10th EASN Virtual Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens" Proceedings by IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering (Online ISSN: 1757-899X). The proceedings issue of the 10th EASN Virtual Conference will be available by the end of January 2021 in the website of IOP Conference Series: Materials Science and Engineering
    • Special Issues: Further to the 10th EASN Virtual Conference Proceedings, a number of selected papers will be published in special issues of reputable international scientific journals following peer review. More specifically
      • Aerospace by MDPI (Cite Score: 1.57 – Scopus Indexed): Manuscripts submitted are currently reviewed by editorial board members and reviewers. Accepted papers are being published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and are already listed together on the special issue website. So far, 6 papers have been accepted and published in the open-access Aerospace Special Issue "10th EASN International Conference on Innovation in Aviation & Space to the Satisfaction of the European Citizens" which can be found here.
      • Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology (AEAT) by Emerald Publishing (Cite Score: 1.11 – Scopus Indexed): The AEAT special issue of the 10th EASN Conference has received, so far more than 14 submissions. Acceptance of papers will be a subject of regular review process performed by experts.

    9th EASN International Conference on "Innovation in Aviation & Space"

  • EASN special issue on the effects of COVID-19

    The Aviation Sector belongs to the sectors most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation is also affecting the respective research agenda and it will be of paramount importance that Aviation stakeholders jointly find ways to mitigate the consequences on the activities in research and education. In this frame EASN initiated a survey on the consequences of this crisis on Aviation Research as well as on the ways to overcome it and presented the results in a dedicated issue on the effects of the pandemic on research in the aviation sector. 

    In this frame, an extended interview on the topic has been given by Mr. Marian-Jean Marinescu, Member of the European Parliament and Chairman of the "Sky and Space" Intergroup. The subject was also introduced in depth with an article of Prof. Dr. Dieter Schmitt, senior aerospace expert and Chairman of the EASN Stakeholders Advisory Board. Furthermore, EASN has invited sixteen distinguished personalities of the European Aeronautical Research Community to share with the readers of the EASN Newsletter their views, by answering the two following questions: 

    The Aviation sector belongs to the sectors most severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

    Question 1 (Q1): In your view, how does this crisis affect Research in the Aviation Sector?

EASN supported projects: Latest news and achievements

  • The three-year EU-funded research project FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 - “Future propulsion and integration: towards a hybrid/electric aircraft” is developing technologies and configurations for a commercial hybrid-electric regional airliner for up to 50 passengers that could enter service in 2035-40.

    During its second semester, the FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 consortium finished the definition of the Top-Level Aircraft Requirements and the identification of the Figures of Merit for a 50pax regional aircraft. With different workshops the state-of-art and innovative trends for the aircraft energy system were identified as well as sub-system enablers and technology gaps. At the end of 2020, the aircraft propulsion architectures of interest for the research project were defined.

    At present the consortium is organizing the FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 Academy which will be officially kicked-off by the end of February 2021 in a digital format. Through the FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 Academy future engineers along with the supervision of university professors and the mentoring of FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 partners are given the opportunity to perform mainly Master Theses but without excluding PhD theses as well, on key-themes identified within the project. Interaction between the participants and FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 researchers will be ensured through the organization of web-conferences, training sessions and physical workshops.

    During the academy’s official launch, the FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 team will make detailed presentations on the scope of the academy, the next steps will be discussed in-depth, and of course, each student will be assigned a mentor from the FᴜᴛPʀIɴᴛ50 consortium.

  • SAFELAND was launched in July 2020 and aims at supporting flight and landing of aircraft operated by a single pilot, in case of incapacitation of the pilot.

    SAFELAND will focus on the ground side and in particular on the role ATM could have in managing the transition from a single pilot operated flight to a status with reduced or absent contribution of the onboard pilot to landing. The project investigates the interaction of the air traffic controller with onboard automation and/or a ground-based pilot operating through a remote cockpit position in order to manage the flight. 

    As the prime concern of SAFELAND Consortium is to validate the initial concepts by experts, the team is organizing the 1st SAFELAND Workshop for the Advisory Board, which is taking place virtually the 27th of January 2021. The objective of this workshop is to present to the SAFELAND Advisory Board (AB) members the initial concepts of operations developed for the situation of a pilot incapacitation in order to derive/collect feedback, views and comments from different professional perspectives.The information collected will be taken into account when designing the final SAFELAND concept, which will be implemented and validated within the project.

  • The analysis of violent sloshing is of great interest for the European aeroplane manufacturers. It has been widely reported that aircraft fuel sloshing significantly damps wing vibrations, but the complexity of the fluid–structure phenomena still demands further research. The EU funded Horizon 2020 SLOWD (SLOshing Wing Dynamics) aims to address this demand by  investigating the effect of sloshing on the dynamics of wing structures carrying fuel through the development of experimental, numerical and analytical methods and use sloshing to reduce loads from gusts and turbulence.

    With a few days to go before the project’s entrance into the halfway point of its three-year lifetime, the SLOWD team is in the position of providing significant outcomes to foster progress in the future. This has also resulted in a significant list of scientific publications since our last update in August which are listed below, while further publications are in the pipeline.

  • The RUMBLE (RegUlation and norM for low sonic Boom LEvels) project has now reached the end of its three and a half - year lifetime and so far all planned activities run as initially foreseen in the project roadmap, while all important milestones have already been achieved. RUMBLE team of experts is pleased to see that all intended results have been accomplished. Strong progress was achieved especially the appropriate tools regarding low sonic boom and supersonic flight which delivered significant data to the consortium. 

    On the 12th of February 2021, the RUMBLE Consortium will conduct the RUMBLE Final Progress Review which will be performed virtually, due to the COVID-19 outbreak and in order to ensure the safety of the stakholders. The partners all allong with the Project Officer and the reviewers, intend to discuss and sum up the outcomes of the research activities and the conclusions in order to ensure that the final results will meet the requirements of the project’s concept, allowing for the successful conclusion of the RUMBLE activities.

    Unfortunately and due to the concerns around the coronavirus (COVID-19), the project Consortium has decided to cancel the physical RUMBLE 2nd Open Workshop. Instead of that, the RUMBLE Consortium organized a virtual event held in the frame of the e-FORUM ACUSTICUM 2020 with the aim to present the project's achievements regarding low sonic boom and supersonic flight. Despite the COVID-19 negative impact, especially for in-person gatherings, the event took place virtually giving the opportunity for RUMBLE to showcase its results. The 2nd RUMBLE Open Workshop took place on Tuesday, 8th December, 2020 from 08:50 to 17:30 and the following presenations have been included in the agenda:

  • PERIOD (PERASPERA In-Orbit Demonstration) project was successfully launched on January 15th 2020 after holding a virtual Kick-Off consortium meeting. Funded by the European Commission as part of its Horizon 2020 Programme and part of the 3rd call of the Strategic Research Cluster (SRC) on Space Robotics Technologies, the €3M project will run for 24 months.

    PERIOD aims to prepare the paradigm shift for changing the way space systems are designed, built and operated, moving from mission-specific solutions to modular spacecraft optimized for the space environment.

    The envisioned demonstrator will be the manufacturing of a functioning satellite in a ‘Factory'. The manufacturing includes fabrication of antenna, assembly of satellite components and its reconfiguration in the Factory. The launched PERIOD project will generate a preliminary design of the demonstration and the orbital Factory.

    PERIOD brings together the competencies of all European key players suited to the implementation of an In-Orbit Demonstration (IOD) mission. The team is coordinated by Airbus Defense and Space GmbH and involves 9 partners with different areas of expertise (Airbus Defence and Space SAS, Airbus Defence and Space Ltd, DFKI, EASN-TIS, GMV, GMV-SKY, ISISPACE, SENER and Space Applications Services). 

    This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101004151.


  • The EU-funded iFACT (iodine Fed Advanced Cusp field Thruster) project is working to further develop an iodine-based ion propulsion system by establishing an efficient European ground test infrastructure, further advancing the “Advanced Cusp Field Thruster” (ACFT) technology, and generating a detailed iodine - material compatibility library.

    But what has the consortium been up to since the time of our last update? During the second semester of 2020, the iFACT team conducted several tests which ranged from the “Advanced Cusp Field Thruster” characterization campaign to the testing of iodine-compatible cathodes and neutralizers. Additionally, the project team developed and is currently experimentally validating various test systems such as a 300W iFACT subsystem with an "Advanced Cusp Field” thruster, an iodine-optimized feed-in architecture for the thruster and a tank suitable to host 10kg of iodine. An endurance test of the subsystem is currently under process while a 3000h firing will follow in the new iodine-compatible test facility of Aerospazio, in Italy. Another important milestone successfully reached was the development of the test system CubeSat Delta, in a power class of 10 W.

    On the 9th of December, 2020 the iFACT Consortium held its M12 Virtual Progress and Review Meeting where partners discussed about the current status of the research activities and the future steps that will take the project to the next level towards achieving its objectives.

Coordination and Support Actions: Latest news

  • The H2020 Coordination and Support Action UMA3 (Unique Materials for Advanced Aerospace Applications), was successfully launched in September 2020 and will have a total duration of 36 months.

    It aims at creating an international excellence center to reinforce the UNIMI-FMSE (Faculty of Materials Science and Engineering) position in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county and Hungary by enhancing the scientific excellence, knowledge and technology degree of innovation potential for Unique Materials for Advanced Aerospace Applications. The concept of UMA3 is based on the creation of a value chain of knowledge in the field of powder metallurgy process, additive manufacturing and high-performance PVD nanocoatings. The challenge addressed is to use the twinning instrument, i.e. excellence center, as a trigger to enhance the competitiveness of regional and national SMEs and large companies in the aerospace sector. The 8 partners involved in the project will join forces to develop new material systems and create new solutions, whilst utilizing their competencies (knowledge, human resources, infrastructures) and cooperate in a synergistic manner. The multi-step process of the project (from theoretical elaboration and experimental engineering to computational modelling) is expected to remarkably contribute to the existing know-how, as well as to the concept-driven, market-based innovation and scientific & research progress.

  • TRA VISIONS 2022 is a European Commission H2020 project which started on 1st November 2020 (grant agreement No 101006593). The main activity of the project is the development and implementation of two competitions for transport research awards to be announced at the TRA (Transport Research Arena) conference in 2022 in Lisbon, Portugal. They are: 

    • The TRA VISIONS 2022 Young Researcher Competition: The competition is aimed at university and technical institute students pursuing bachelor, master and PhD degrees. This competition represents an opportunity for young researchers to showcase their work on an international stage at the above-mentioned conference.
    • The TRA VISIONS 2022 Senior Researcher Competition: The competition is for senior researchers in the field of innovative transport concepts based on results only from EU funded projects.

    Both competitions cover all transport modes (road, rail, waterborne, airborne, and cross modality) in line with the EC policy objectives for smart, green, and integrated transport. Registrations to the two competitions will soon be opened and details will be available on the project’s website: https://www.travisions.eu.   

  • What does the AAT-Community think about open science? In what way is it already implemented and does everybody know what open science is? What are the opportunities and where are the bottle necks?

    To answer these questions, the OSCAR team stepped out of their usual routine and conducted many surveys and interviews. We received a large amount of feedback, showing that open science is known and wins more and more recognition in the daily work with AAT projects. Futhermore, open science is seen as a possible key enabler for future breaktrough technologies. However, the survey also showed, that certain open science practices and tools are not yet known or their field of application is still unclear. It also becomes apparent that there is a lack of resources, especially of time, personnel and finance, for the implementation of open science. Another concrete demand from the AAT community is the necessity for a commonly used web platform for secure exchange of data and information. Also, it was highlighted, that the access to certain information must be adjustable and that the data quality and their long-term availability should be ensured by this platform.

    The OSCAR team thanks everybody for the active participation in the surveys and interviews. The information gathered will be used to create a code of conduct for open science tailored to the requirements of  the AAT-Community.   • Aerospace Editorial Office is pleased to announce that the open access journal Aerospace has been accepted for inclusion in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) in the Web of Science. Aerospace is publishing its 7th volume this year. Articles published from Vol. 5 (2018) will be covered in SCIE. 

    Aerospace is a peer-reviewed open access journal of aeronautics and astronautics published monthly by MDPI. A first decision is provided to authors within 19 days after submission. Acceptance to publication is undertaken 4 days. EASN and ECATS members receive a discount on the article processing charges.

  • TCTool Consortium delivered successfully its Critical Design Review (CDR) to Fokker Technologies Holding B.V. who are the Topic Manager of the project. TCTool aims to deliver an adaptive assembly tool for the fuselage skin, an end-effector to pick and place the fuselage clips and an end-effector to conduct short thermoplastic welds for fuselage components.

    The TWI coordinated project is funded as part of the Clean Sky initiative under GA 865131. The collaborative consortium also includes topic manager GKN Fokker, Brunel University London, London South Bank University, Acroflight Ltd and FADA-CATEC.

  • The D-JOINTS project, started its activities in May 2021 and aims to develop innovative composite-metal joints with enhanced lightning strike protection (LSP) through the utilisation of a sizing tool for the design of the joints based on their thermomechanical and electromagnetic performance. The overall simulation solution will be provided by coupling externally three separate solutions which are linked through five coupling variables.

    The TWI coordinated project is funded as part of the Clean Sky initiative under GA 887042. The collaborative consortium also includes Topic Manager Evektor, Cranfield University and Brunel University London.

  • PADICTON project goes further with its technical activities. A testing kit which was prepared from Brunel University London, TWI and FDM Digital Solutions to measure the thermal conductivity using a Fox 50 instrument for a thermoplastic powder. The kit consists of two borosilicate glass discs at the top and bottom, a film to ease moving the setup and a 3D printed ring to hold everything together.

  • The TOD Consortium is thrilled to announce the start of the production of complex aerospace parts through linear friction welding (LFW). Linear friction welding is an emerging technology for the manufacturing of titanium and aluminium alloy aerospace components. The tools chain is almost completed and the start of thermoplastic parts manufacturing is getting closer.

    The TWI coordinated project is funded as part of the Clean Sky initiative under grant agreement number 821192. The collaborative consortium also includes the Topic Manager Leonardo, DEMA and CETMA.

  • AISA (AI Situational Awareness Foundation for Advancing Automation) has started this year and will run till the end of 2022. AISA is a SESAR Exploratory Research project aiming to create a team situational awareness among human and machine. The project will explore domain-specific application of transparent and generalizable artificial intelligence methods in the field of air traffic management.

    The team: University of Zagreb is the coordinator, and the consortium is: Johaness Kepler University of Linz, Technische Universität Braunschweig, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Zurich University of Applied Sciences, Skyguide and Slot Consulting.

  • University of the West of England (Bristol, UK) has been awarded a grant to contribute towards developing the Dock-to-Dock use case scenario as part of the UK Research and Innovation sponsored Future Flight Challenge. A team of four UWE researchers, along with partners from Cardiff University, Neoptera Aero Ltd and Smart Ports Ltd, will deliver on the use case definition and evaluation, route characterisation and eVTOL assessment activities.

    Researchers at UWE Bristol will develop a simplified performance analysis model of eVTOL, define the optimal route and flight profile for the dock to dock operation between the docks of Bristol and Cardiff, develop a digital twin for the system-of-systems analysis and analyse the eVTOL operational peculiarities from economical and performance points of view.
