EASN supported projects: Latest news and achievements

  • The CORSAIR project has recently completed its 42-month duration, which was marked with the project’s final meeting at the premises of Polytechnic University of Milano. By the end of the project, the partners have successfully built a Portable Cold Spray Unit which was tested on different alloys and industrial parts. The achieved results were viewed very positively from the industrial partners, who have expressed their interest for further exploration of Cold Spray as a repairing technique, as they were able to show that the achieved CORSAIR results are economically worthwhile for in-house repairs. Indeed, CORSAIR succeeded its goal in validating Cold Spray as an effective repair process. In particular, the mechanical characterization is a fundamental step to extend the application of cold spray from geometric restoring to structural part, able to carry heavy load without any penalty with respect of the base material and the virgin, undamaged, part. In particular, the study realized on the fatigue behavior of cold sprayed repaired parts opens new fields for cold spray as a repairing technique and extends its practical use to new applications.  Klara Petrackova (pictured below), a POLIMI researcher who has been working on her PhD thesis within CORSAIR, was recently awarded at the Young Professionals Presentation Competition at the North American Cold Spray Conference 2016, Edmonton, Nov. 30-Dec 1, 2016, on her presentation on Fatigue life of cold sprayed aluminium alloy coating for repair application, which discussed her research within CORSAIR. Furthermore, CORSAIR has supported the development of 3 Bachelor, 5 Master and 4 PhD thesis, allowing young engineers to be trained upon state-of-the-art research and enhance the scientific profile of the participating institutions. • ComBoNDT

ComBoNDT aims to develop a quality assurance concept for adhesive bonding of load-critical CFRP primary aircraft structures, and to allow overcoming current limitations regarding certification of composites. With the participation of leading manufacturers, the industry is heavily involved in the project; concrete fields of application and contamination scenarios were defined by taking into account representative production and repair cases from the aerospace industry. For many of the contaminants studied, there was limited or no reference in the literature for mechanical characterization. A fully experimental characterization and explanation is now provided for various commonly encountered defects in aeronautics contaminations and the effects they have on the integrity of the bondline of adhesive composite joints, thus moving a step forward to understanding and expanding the use of adhesive bonds in aerostructures. If the techniques under development are proven to be effective, this could lead to significant reduction of time and costs related to unscheduled repairing of undetected weak bonds. Moreover, the downtime of the aircraft will be reduced, resulting in overall costs reduction. The ComBoNDT project has recently completed its first half, of its entire 36-month duration. For more information, please visit http://combondt.eu/

In Picture: Aerosol-Wetting-Test BoNDTinspect (AWT), one of the techniques applied within ComBoNDT project for quality assurance of surfaces parts. Depending on the surface state and surface energy, droplets of an aerosol form wide or narrow drops when applied to surfaces. When several droplets are deposited, the property of a surface to be wetted can be characterised by the droplet size distribution. If the surface energy of a sample is low, e.g. due to contaminations like release agents, narrow drops will be formed on the surface.

  • PERSEUS

The H2020 financed project “Promoting Excellence & Recognition Seal of European Aerospace Universities (PERSEUS)”, has identified one possible roadmap for the definition of a European quality label for aerospace related higher education degrees. The duration of the project has been of 2 years, from December 2014 to November 2016, and has involved a great portion of the European stakeholders in aerospace: Universities, Research Centers, Networks and Associations, Accreditation agencies. The core concept established by the project is that it is possible to establish a sector-specific quality system that can complement the existing national or European accreditation systems, providing added value to the internal and/or external quality assurance processes that are in place in most EU Universities.

The recommendation to implement a voluntary labelling system for aerospace education has been on the table for several years, but no structured action at the EU level has been planned so far. Discussions have been arisen on the subject of the validity of an accreditation system mainly to separate the scientific content from the administrative, organizational and infrastructural aspects. The PERSEUS project has mainly focused on the scientific and teaching aspects which appeared to be more interesting for both students and industries. The main result of this labelling system appears to be the definition and application of a Knowledge and Abilities identification system which could significantly increase the students' confidence and skills, enhance their mobility across Europe, as well as allow for better exploiting the potential of European Aeronautical engineers. It could also complement existing European, national or regional accreditation systems for engineering education, being careful to avoid duplication and bureaucracy.

PERSEUS has recently successfully held its final open Workshop in Brussels at the EC premises, whereby the ideas developed were shared with relevant key stakeholders from the entire European aerospace engineering community.

  • Radian Project

For several historical reasons the economic activities in aviation industry are unevenly distributed across Europe. There are countries and regions featuring low involvement in aviation research and also low participation in the EU Framework Programmes; and there are some regions heavily involved in aviation R&D, being origin of wealth and prosperity. RADIAN is a multi-step project which intends to overcome this misbalance by identification of barriers for international collaboration in aviation research at EU level and by subsequent development and verification of solutions and measures on level of the European regions.

The initial step is to assess the impact of regional, national and international environment on aviation actors. By systematically comparing single impact scenarios for various actors located in different European regions, barriers for cooperation will be identified. Using this verified knowledge, 12 target regions will be identified to derive, verify and execute tailored activity plans aiming at the enhancement of the actor’s ability to cooperate by reducing the disadvantageous impact or by the advancement of actor’s own knowledge and abilities. RADIAN will also develop a self-sustaining collaboration platform which aims at becoming a live portal, for providing personalized information related to the users’ interests such as open calls, available funding schemes, recent advancements etc.

The highlights of this period include the initial integration of the Machine Translation systems in a real-live MOOC platform which proved the viability of the work performed within the project and the thorough comparison of phrase-based, syntax-based, and neural machine translation algorithms on MOOC-related test data. In terms of disseminating the important research results of the project, during the last months TraMOOC was present at the Translating Europe Forum 2016, the 11th International Workshop on Semantic and Social Media Adaptation and Personalization (SMAP 2016), the Languages and the Media 2016 and the 12th IFIP International Conference on Artificial Intelligence Applications and Innovations (AIAI 2016).

In a nutshell, important technical work has been performed during this period and most of this period’s objectives have been achieved. More information about the project's progress and latest results is available on the project's progress timeline.
